Woohoo! Aston Martin is back in British hands!
Wednesday 14 March , 2007
…Or so the headlines screamed the last few days…So what does this even mean?
Well for those of you who are unaware of Aston Martin… it is the manufacturer of luxury performance cars, founded in 1913, by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford, with headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire, England.
So still. What does that mean?
Time for a picture I think….
This is a car by Aston Martin! (You can hover over each word to see too!
)
Hopefully we’re all on the same page now.
Right then, back to my point. Up until a few days ago, the famous English marque was actually in the ownership of the great Ford Motor Company of America.
Well after a brief liason with American Ford, it seems the beloved Aston is back home.
Cause for celebration then?
Must be why all the news media have been screaming in delight at its return. And ’screaming’ they have:
- Brits To Take Back Aston Martin
- Aston Martin British Once More
- Aston Martin returns to British soil
- Ford sell Aston Martin back to Britain
So is the fanfare justified?
Not really, no.
Yes, Dave Richards, a brit, did lead the consortium that bought Aston from Ford, but did he do it alone? Its an all-British endeavour?
Afraid not. Seems there are two Kuwaiti Investment groups, Investment Dar and Adeem Investments, that make up the consortium. And initial speculation suggests that these two hold a 50% stake while Ford retain a stake of 12.6%.
So how much of it is exactly British then? Seems the Kuwaiti’s are having a fanfare of thier own.
Just another example of the British pompousness, trying to salvage a prestige that has been long lost.
In the current times of international finance and an ever-shrinking, connected, wired world, there is no longer a place for British grandeur.
Gone are the days of British prestige and global standing. Its only a shame that not everybody realises it.
Truly British global companies that are still successful, have quite rightly realised this and have so dropped thier ‘Britishness’.
Companies such as British Telecom and British Aerospace, now operate as BT and BAe Systems, respectively. ‘British’ is no longer so fashionable in the global arena…
Its quite important that the remaining segments of Britain realise this as well. It is exactly this pompousness that has resulted in British troops being dragged into the ‘War on Terror’.
(How exactly you have war with a noun, only the likes of George W****r Bush and Poodle Blair can explain…)
Honestly, just how much use are British troops compared to the vast military machine of the United States? Lets put it into numbers. British forces are struggling to make up 10,000… US forces exceed the hundred thousands.
Yep, where would the American’s be without the British? Well they would have one less worry of the uncomfortable term ‘friendly fire,’ as all the deaths would jus come under the ugly term of ‘collateral damage.’ Simple.
The real reason British forces are needed in Iraq is because America needed other countries involved to legitimise thier illegal invasion and search for oil. Which schoolboy shot his hand up when America asked “Who’s with us for a field trip?” Yes… Poodle Blair.
Why did Britain want in? Well its that pompousness again. Trying to regain that lost prestige.
This is why the Kuwaiti involvement is the most ironic thing of all. This the country that was under British mandate, amongst most of the middle east, after the First World War.
It is now this same country that is helping Britain in salvaging its pride with Aston Martin.
This, however, is not an isolated example. Less than a year ago, another British motor company, MG Rover, went into administration and faced collapse. Where did all hope for the government pin on?
The Shanghai Automotive Company and Nanjing Automobile, both of China to buy the company, saving thousands of UK jobs.
This is the same China, that Britain subjugated during the days of Empire. Oh how things change…
Going down the list, we’ve got the American colonies, Middle East, and China. All having turned the tables with its former Imperialist Master and exerting influence over it.
(Look at the Saudi ‘Al-Yamamah’ deal with Britain and the corruption that came with it to see more of how the Middle East exerts influence over Britain.)
Seems only India and Africa are left to have its former Imprialist Master begging for help. As for the former of the two, it doesn’t seem too far off does it? Africa will no doubt get there too.
Seems it is evidence for the same segments of pompous Britain to say
“Hey.. the collonial children grew up…”
For the segments of Britain that still believe they retain thier long lost prestige, what else can you expect from thier deluded selves?
To wrap up, I think its quite interesting this Aston Martin triggered my post. As what has really made Aston Martin famous? It is its association with Bond… James Bond.
Aston Martin cannot deny how much it owes its position to 007.
So why is this interesting? Well some would say that Ian Fleming created James Bond as he himself was also another of those deluded few in denial of the British Empire being no more.
He created 007 after the break up of the Empire in a last ditch effort to show how even without Empire, James Bond can still go to those far flung exotic places of the world for adventures…
All in the name of Her Majesty’s Goverment ofcourse.
I mean, “Britannia Rules the Waves” and
“The Sun never sets on the British Empire”… right?
Yes, so to end. I cant help but remember the story of a blogger in South Africa who mentioned Aston Martin in one of his articles in a good light and so to his astonishment, he was offered the Aston Martin DB9 for a whole day as thanks.
So I would like to say that if the new owner, Dave Richards, wishes to let me have completely a brand new Aston Martin Rapide, I shall gladly fall in line with the rest of the media and shout at the top of my voice, “Aston Martin IS British” once everyday, for as long as I drive it.
Going to happen? Well I hold out in hope. Forever the Optimist.
And rescind my post for a £200,000 car? I think I am selling myself quite cheaply here…

What a great post, and deserving of a car, in my humble opinion
But such an interesting point you raise around imperial leftovers.
Thanks for the link!
Cheers Mike. I read your blog such a long time ago but extreme jealousy maintains it fresh in my memory.
Maybe put in a good word with Aston for me?
Interesting.
this car is sooooooooo HOT!!!
